Milan is great because it has something for everyone. For the ladies it has fashion and long late lunches, for music fans it’s the home of Opera, culture vultures can devour the Last Supper and for the boys there’s calcio – football. Home to two of the world’s top football teams, AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano (aka FC Inter or Inter Milan), Milan could well be as important to football as it is to fashion.
While it may be tempting for groups to split up and indulge in their own passions seperately, here at Last Supper Tickets we would argue that the joy of traveling is trying new things. And where better to develop a new interest than Italy, a country famed for its passion? So go on, try a bit of everything that Milan has to offer with a visit to the Last Supper one day, a spot of shopping the next and be sure pull to on a jersey and take in some football in Milan before you leave. Who knows, you might just enjoy it!
The city’s (and country’s) main temple to the gods of football is San Siro Stadium, home pitch to both AC Milan and Inter Milan. For many visitors, attending a match here is a highlight of not just a visit to Milan but of any Italy trip. In Milan, football is not just a game – it’s war. Allegiances are not so much chosen as passed down at birth with teeny tiny football shirts a must-have accessory for any Milanese tot worth his salt. In season, San Siro is the hottest joint in town. Packed to the rafters for home games, the air fizzes with electricity and rings with the sound of ardent football chants. Faces are painted, flags waved, fists shaken, tears cried, throats screamed hoarse and the referee cursed to an early grave. The winners are hailed as heroes and carried out on the shoulders of gods. The losers abandoned by all but their mothers. Then the whistle blows and everyone shakes hands and heads to the pub for a drink. Because at the end of the day, all's fair in love and football.
The Italian football season runs from August to May so if you are in town during those months, be sure to head along to a game. Inter Milan and AC Milan play in San Siro on alternating Sundays and tickets sell fast so you would be well advised to buy a few days in advance. For AC Milan games you can buy tickets at New Milan Point, Corso San Gottardo 2, or for Inter Milan matches just head to any branch of Banca Poplare di Milan. If you are really determined to make it to a match, consider purchasing Milan football tickets before you leave home. You can buy Inter Milan tickets online here and AC Milan tickets here. Prices start at only €12 for the really far away seats and can reach upwards of €120 for the best seats.
Italy football fans visiting Milan in June, July and August shouldn’t despair though. Visiting San Siro Stadium off-season is still possible and is well worth the journey for die-hard fans. Seeing the stadium empty is a strange experience and even without the fans it seems to reverberate with energy. For a small entrance fee visitors can also see the San Siro football museum, a pretty impressive collection of Milan football memorabilia, caricatures and old match footage. For an extra cost super-fans can opt to take a guided tour which visits the players’ locker room. Can’t you almost taste the sweat and anticipation?
